Ingredients Needed
Ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions are on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Sweet Potatoes – Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet and become incredibly tender when cooked. Use the orange-fleshed varieties for the best results.
- Butter – Unsalted butter adds richness and helps create the glaze that coats the sweet potatoes.
- Sugars – Light brown sugar adds a deep, molasses-like sweetness. Granulated sugar enhances the overall sweetness and helps with the glaze.
- Flavorings – Vanilla extract adds a gentle flavor and adds sweetness. The addition of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger provides earthy and spicy flavors that complement the dish’s sweetness. Feel free to sub this with orange juice.
- Salt – A pinch of salt balances the sweetness of the other ingredients.

Notes
- Make-Ahead Option: You can make the candied sweet potatoes one day early. Just reheat them gently on the stove before serving.
- Vary the Sweetness: If you prefer a less sweet dish, you can reduce the amount of sugar by ¼ cup in total. You can replace some white sugar with natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey for a different taste.
- Note that this recipe uses sweet potatoes, not yams. The difference between sweet potatoes and yams is significant, with sweet potatoes having a sweeter, moister flesh compared to the starchier texture of yams. It’s best to use sweet potatoes in this recipe.
