While Goya adobo seasoning is super tasty, making your own homemade adobo is ideal in that you can control the amount of salt added, and there are no additional preservative ingredients. Quickly create your own adobo seasoning with ingredients you likely already have in your pantry.

While adobo seasoning is commonly associated with Puerto Rican and Mexican cooking, its versatility extends beyond those culinary traditions. The flavor profile can enhance the flavors of any dish with its unique spice blend.

I’m a huge fan of bold flavors, and this adobo seasoning comes in handy on many easy recipes. Try using it as the seasoning for these air fryer chicken breasts or add some when cooking beans. It adds a savory note, enhances the natural richness of the ingredients, and infuses a touch of warmth.

Adobo Seasoning Variations

Adjust the spice blend to fit your tastes, while still maintaining the integrity of the spice.

  • Spicy: Add chili powder, cayenne pepper, or crushed red pepper flakes to amp up the heat.
  • Sweet: Add brown sugar for a touch of sweetness.
  • Citrus: Add the dried zest of lemons, lime, or orange to brighten the flavors of dried citrus.

  • Soups and stews: Adobo seasoning can be used as a flavor enhancer in soups, stews, or chili recipes, giving them a savory kick.
  • Snacks and dips: Sprinkle adobo seasoning on popcorn, roasted nuts, or homemade chips for a zesty and savory snack. It can also be added to dips like guacamole or salsa for an extra flavor boost.

FAQ’s

Is adobo seasoning spicy?

Store-bought adobo seasoning, like goya adobo seasoning, is fairly mild, as the only source of heat is black pepper. If you love a bit more heat, then homemade adobo seasoning is right for you. Control the spice mix to your personal preference.

Notes

  • This recipe makes about 1/3 cup of seasoning. Double or triple the recipe for a larger batch.
  • If you like spicy food, add a little cayenne pepper for heat, or include other spices, such as smoked paprika, or chipotle powder, for a smoky flavor.
