Full Instructions are available in the
recipe card at the bottom of the post.
You can find important tips/tricks in the
blog post.

My Air Fryer has somewhat become of a staple in our house for breakfast foods now. We use it either to make bacon, livermush (It’s a North Carolina thing), air fryer steak, air fryer egg frittatas, and now...boiled eggs.

Ok, so technically the eggs aren’t boiled because they are placed in your Air Fryer with no water. But the finished product and consistency is the equivalent of boiling the perfect hard boiled egg on the stove.

The only way I can explain why this happens because of...magic. The Air Fryer is magical and it can pretty much do every and anything 🙂

How to make Hard Boiled Eggs in an Air Fryer

First, Preheat your Air Fryer to 270 degrees Fahrenheit. To preheat mine, I just start my Air Fryer with nothing in it and allow it to run for 3 minutes.

Once your Air Fryer is preheated, place 1-6 large eggs in the Air Fryer basket.

whole eggs in air fryer basket

Cook on 270 degrees for 15 minutes.

Once 15 minutes is up, place your eggs in an ice water bath. This shocks the heck out of the eggs and this is what helps them peel. Ironically, I used to take water baths after races when i ran track in college, they suck. I feel the eggs pain...but it has gotta happen.

After 5 minutes in the ice bath, remove the eggs and peel. You will have hard boiled egg perfection.

Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs vs. Stove Hard Boiled Eggs

I found that the stove version and the air fryer version are about the same in consistency.

Also, some brown spots tend to get on the outside of the eggs cooked in the Air Fryer. I initially thought they were leftover crumbs from the Air Fryer but then realized it happens all the time, even when my Air Fryer is super duper clean. So if your looking for your eggs to be pretty on the outside, stove top is the way to go.

Cooking in the Air Fryer takes about the same amount of time it takes to make on the stove when you factor in bringing your water to a boil. I personally find that the Air Fryer method is less hands on as I'm only waiting for a timer to go off. On the stove, I'd have to know watch for the boiling water.

But for me, when I’m getting dressed in the morning and need something quick, the Air Fryer method works best for me. I don’t have to pay attention to when the water is boiling and all that jazz.

Notes for Air Fryer Eggs

  • I recommend testing this method with one egg initially to calculate the best amount of time for your Air Fryer.
  • I’ve tried these eggs in different wattage Air Fryers. Here were my times and results:
    • Philips Avance XL - 2100 watts - 270 degrees at 15 minutes.
    • Ninja Foodi - 1400 watts - 300 degrees at 15 minutes.
    • Farberware - 1300 watts - 270 degrees for 16 minutes.
  • If your eggs have cracks or leaks, they will leak out during the Air Frying cycle.
  • This method works on brown or white eggs.
  • Fresh eggs may not produce the same results. I use store bought eggs for this method.

I've been cooking my eggs in the air fryer for a while now...BUT for some reason this last batch was a disaster. I use this recipe and do the ice bath after....and they have always been perfect...until this last time....I can't peel them and the white is kind of hard and it looks burned....so weird..anyone have any ideas? I've used the same eggs every time...Wegmans organic cage free large brown eggs....not sure why this time was so bad.

@susan, for some reason, fresher eggs don’t peel as well. It has nothing to do with the cooking method. The ice bath works best with eggs that are at least 1 week old. It makes for better separation from the shell.

Love the air fryer. Love cooking the hard boiled eggs, but still not easy to peel every under ice water.
Any ideas on how to solve this?

Hi Karin, it should peel easily. I actually leave mine in the bowl in ice water for about 5 minutes. I also use large eggs. Are your eggs a different size?

@Tanya, I did mine in ninja foodi grill. 300 for 17 minutes.Ice bath after for at least 5 minutes and they would not peel. My eggs are old and all jumbo.

Hi Helene, I'm not sure what went wrong. I don't have a Foodi Grill, just the ninja foodi, so it's hard to pinpoint what went wrong. My guess is that they cooked a few minutes too long. I'd try and reduce the time by a couple of minutes.

I am very new to air frying, and haven't tried the eggs yet. I saw you mentioned about keeping them from rolling around. Have you thought to try the egg rack for the instant pot in your air fryer? I have 2 of those (a set) where one sits higher than the other, and it would keep the eggs secure. You could do 1 to 14 eggs at a time. I can send you a picture of the racks via email if you get "replies" to your 5 day series that I am receiving from you.

Hi Cyndi, I actually have a rack but the eggs rolling around don't really bother me so I don't actually use it. I do think it would come in handy if I make more than 6 eggs. Thank you for letting me know how many they hold.

I have the Emeril LaGasse air fryer, which is like the size of a toaster oven and the air comes out of the right side, not the top. I have done other recipes as suggested and they came out great, to my not very good at cooking surprise. I did the 270° for 15 minutes, then the ice bath. Sadly, hardly cooked at all, a very runny mess, with a few tiny harder, tough patches of white. The dog loved them! Any suggestions for my redo?

Hi Jen B, so sorry to hear about the eggs? I don't have the Emeril so I honestly am not too sure about the specs. Are your eggs farm fresh eggs? I've only used store bought for the recipe. If you try again I would just cook a few minutes longer. So 270 for 17-18 minutes.

Tried a couple of times with my ninja, but the egg is yellow and tough on the outside. One I tested popped a piece of the shell. Also almost impossible to peel. Followed your instructions. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Hi Bob, Are they farm fresh eggs? That may be the issue. I've used brown and white eggs from my local grocer and both worked well. But farm fresh may yield different results.

I have the Paula Deen air fryer which is 1700 watts, I have done some before but were runny. How long do you think I will need to cook? I don't have a basket it is just a tray inside.

Hi Mary, I would start with 15 minutes. If they were too runny I would go up to 17 minutes. When I tested these in my different machines, they were never runny. I just needed an extra minute for the Farbeware to make it hard boiled.

Thank you so much. You're so right, I became hooked on air frying cooking and I love all the things I can make in my air fryers. For the liver mush, we slice it thin and place it in our air fryer and cook it on 370 degrees fahrenheit for 12-15 minutes. Makes it nice and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The brand we usually buy is the Frank Corriher brand.

That’s all well and good. But I can’t get around an egg cooker for cooking eggs. They work perfectly every time. But you do need to heed the ice water bath and a mason jar to shake each egg in.

Worked great! But the ice bath has nothing to do with how easy they peel. It's simply that they aren't moving. You get a nice air pocket on top that doesn't happen in a rolling boil. They're easy to peel out of an Instant Pot or microwave egg cooker, ice bath or not, for the same reason. The ice bath is just to stop them from continuing to cook. You can skip the ice step by just cooking them a few minutes less and waiting longer to peel them. Or just put them in the fridge.

Thanks Lisa, good to know 🙂 I didn’t even test it without the ice bath because it worked so well with it. Your method is perfect if you don’t have the extra time.

I was surprised to know that eggs could be boiled in an air fryer. I did half a dozen at the time and temperatures mentioned and they came out perfect. As I like half boiled eggs more, can you tell the timings and temperature for that? Will they be reduced to half as for full boiled eggs?

Hi Corrie, I haven't done half boiled eggs so I wouldn't be able to answer with 100% accuracy. I'd try with one egg first and reduce the time by 3-4 minutes and see if that works.
