Ingredients for Baked Air Fryer Apples

Ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions are on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Apples - I use Honeycrisp apples for this recipe, but other kinds will work as well, such as Granny Smith or Fuji.
  • Butter - I use unsalted butter in this recipe.
  • Oats and Walnuts - for making the delicious filling. I use Old-fashioned oats and chopped walnuts in this recipe. Feel free to substitute the walnuts with your favorite nut.
  • Spices - Ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
  • For serving - Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

How to Make Baked Apples in the Air Fryer

Step 1: Cut the apples in half from the stem to the bottom. Use a paring knife, spoon, or melon scoop to remove the core, stem, and part of the inside to create a hollow opening. Set aside.

Step 2: Combine the butter, old-fashioned oats, brown sugar, walnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl and stir until well combined.

Add the mixture evenly into each apple half.

Step 3: Place apples in the air fryer basket. Air fry at 350°F (177°C) for 20-25 minutes, until the apples are tender and the oat mixture is toasted.

What are the best apples to use?

Sweet but tart apples are best for this recipe, particularly those with firmer flesh. I used Honeycrisp, but Granny Smith or Fuji will also work. Use apples that are firm to the touch with no marks or bruises on the skin.

Can you make them ahead of time?

These baked air fryer apples are best enjoyed as soon as they are cooked, but leftovers will keep well, covered in the fridge for a couple of days, and they can be reheated in the air fryer for 3 to 4 minutes at 370 degrees Fahrenheit (188°C).

It's best not to prep the apples too far ahead of time, as once you cut them open, they will start to brown. You can mix the filling ahead of time and keep it covered in the fridge till you are ready to use it.

Can you make them without an air fryer?

If you don't have an air fryer, you can still make this delicious dessert in the oven. Prepare the recipe as follows, then place the apples in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit (191°C). It will take slightly longer to get them tender, around 40 minutes, but they will still come out delicious!

Tanya's Top Tips

  • Make sure to cut the apples in half from stem to bottom so they fit in the air fryer and are far enough away from the heating element. Apples that are too close to the heating element may become too crisp on the top.
  • Don't cut and hollow out the apples too far in advance, or they will start to brown.
  • Use a fork to check that the apples are tender before serving.
  • If you're a fan of homemade spices, sub the cinnamon and nutmeg with ½ teaspoon of my apple pie spice mix.

It was good with pink lady apples. I only used 2 T. Butter and it was enough. I cooked for 17 minutes and it was done.
