Summer fish fries are my favorite outings. I’m talking about catfish, whiting, and perch—yummy! I had those days when I wanted that amazing fish at home, but didn’t want to deal with frying it in oil.
I bought an air fryer on a whim during my pregnancy. Now, I can easily make delicious golden-fried fish filets without all the grease, whenever I want.
The floured and seasoned white fish is flavorful, simple to prep and cook, and the crust is addictively crispy.

How to make Crispy Air-Fried Fish
Air-fried fish is pretty straightforward and takes about four simple steps. The beauty of this recipe is that you don't need any extra ingredients outside of your typical fish breading and a little oil in a spray bottle. All you'll do is:
Add fish seasoning to a sealable bag, like a Ziplock bag, and shake. Set to the side. You could also use your favorite fish batter mix.
Rinse and pat dry your fish fillets with paper towels. They should still be damp.
Place fish fillets in a ziplock bag and shake until fillets are fully covered with seasoning.
Place fillets on a baking rack to allow any excess flour to fall off.
Grease the bottom of your air fryer basket and place the fillets in it. Cook the filets at 400 degrees for 7-10 minutes.
Open the basket and spray the fish on the side facing up before flipping, ensuring that the fish is fully coated.
Flip and cook on the other side for 7-8 minutes.
What's the best fish to use?
I use whiting fish in this recipe; however, this method will work for other white fish. If making a fried catfish version, soak it in milk first.
Can you make this recipe with frozen fish?
I suggest using fresh fish fillets for this recipe or good-quality frozen fillets. If using frozen, ensure they are fully thawed before seasoning them, and pat them with a paper towel to remove excess water.
Is air-fried fish healthier than deep-frying?
Fish is a great source of protein and works well in all kinds of meals. Air fryer fish gives you a crispy, golden crust similar to deep frying, but uses less oil and comes out crispier than oven-baked versions.
What do you serve it with?
This crispy air fryer fish is perfect for an easy weeknight family dinner with potato and veggie sides and some hot sauce, remoulade sauce, and tartar sauce! Serve it up with some of these favorites:
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Spray your oil only halfway through cooking, as this will increase crispiness.
- Do not overcrowd your air fryer basket; your fish will steam rather than fry.
- When spraying, make sure the fish and all seasoning are fully covered in oil, with no flour spots showing. You will not get that good golden color if flour spots are showing.
- Eat fried fish immediately. All fried foods are better that way.
- You must have hot sauce. I mean, it's just a must.
- Serve with lemon wedges.

I'm doing chicken drumsticks in my air fryer, but, it seems like they cook to a crisp......they are hard to eat....do I have the air fryer up to high ...I have an xl Air Fryer and the degrees say 140...160....200....how high should I have the air fryer for the chicken drumsticks to be eaten????
Tanya says
Hi Rosalynn, you're probably cooking them too long. I cook my drumsticks on 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes. How long you cook them will depend on the size of the drumsticks and your air fryer. Here's my drumstick recipe. Hope it helps 🙂 https://www.myforkinglife.com/sticky-bbq-air-fryer-chicken-legs/

I made this tonight and it was excellent! My 8-yr-old twins gobbled it up as well. I used tilapia and followed the recipe as written. Thank you for this delicious addition to our menu lineup.

Unfortunately I used Wall-Mart brand frozen whirring fillets which were way to thin. I also used the spray canned avocado oil. This batch should have been air fried in my Ninja Good I Grill for less time. I think maybe 3-4 minutes less. They turned out dry and did not look anywhere near yours. I also did not get the chance to read all the reviews prior as it was getting late. However, I will try this again using my mister and cooking less time. I will let you know how they turn out. I'm determined to get these right!
Tanya says
Hi Marlie, sorry to hear that. Yes, thinner fillets would require less cooking time. I'd even start by cutting the time down to 6 minutes per side and checking to see if it's done at that point.

Thank you for your fish recipe

Recipe is spot on. My wife and I used talipia and instead of breadcrumbs we used Louisiana fish fry. 17 minutes was just right because the fish was thick. It was crunchy on the outside and moist in the middle. Great Recipe thank you.
Tanya says
Thank you Thomas 🙂 So glad you liked the recipe.
Amanda says
I didn't have cornmeal or breadcrumbs, so I crumbled a bunch of Fritos corn chips and used those in the place of cornmeal. The family loved them! Thanks for the great recipe!
Tanya says
I love that idea Amanda. So glad it worked out.
Royce says
I meant to say panko breadcrumbs!
Tanya says
Hi Royce, Panko would work.
Royce says
Excited to try the recipe! I was wondering If I could use finely blended panic breadcrumbs instead of cornmeal?
Garry says
Just did this and it came out perfect in my new air-fryer. Now going to check out your other recipes. Thanks

Thank you Gary! So glad you liked the recipe.

Thanks for your recipes. I used breadcrumbs instead of cornmeal and followed the rest to tee. Used catfish filets. They were excellent. No leftovers and I have some pretty picky eaters. Reduced cooking time after the turn to 7 minutes. Thanks again
Tanya says
So glad you liked them Mike. I love the idea of using breadcrumbs too for the perfect crispy texture.
