You can find important tips/tricks in the
blog post.

I use my Air Fryer quite often. It’s not only for fries, wings, and steak…I also make delicious, quick, and easy snacks. I enjoy using the air fryer for quick snacks with frozen foods.

My favorite snack is chickpeas. I like grabbing a chickpea can and putting it in the air fryer. I roast them, and in less than 20 minutes, I have a delicious snack. They're also great as a salad topper.

I’ve been roasting chickpeas for a while. They’re healthy for you, high in fiber, and are tasty and much less expensive than other snacks you can purchase.

I used to roast them in my oven but found that roasting chickpeas in the oven gave inconsistent results. I can’t stand grabbing one chickpea that is super crispy while the next is a soft, wet mess. The Air Fryer made every single chickpea crispy.

Ingredients Needed

  • A can of chickpeas
  • Oil to spray on chickpeas
  • Seasonings

How to make Crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas

First, open and drain a 15.5-oz can of garbanzo beans. Garbanzo beans and chickpeas are the same. I don’t bother rinsing them, but you can do it if you like; make sure to drain them in a colander.

Next, add the drained chickpeas to the air fryer basket, spreading them out across the bottom.

This is how we’ll dry the chickpeas before we add oil.

Close the air fryer basket and set the temperature to 390 degrees Fahrenheit. Set the timer for 17 minutes. After 5 minutes, open the air fryer basket. At this point, your chickpeas should be dry and ready for you to spray them with oil.

I fill my spray bottle with oil for my air fryer cooking.

After spraying the chickpeas with oil, I close the air fryer basket. Then, I continue the cooking cycle and shake the basket every 5 minutes.

When there are about 2 minutes left, I add half of my seasoning combination. This allows the chickpeas to roast without the seasonings burning or falling off.

Continue to cook for the last 2 minutes, and then remove the chickpeas. If you need a little crispier, put them in for a few more minutes. I found that the 17-minute total cooking time was perfect for the chickpeas in my Phillips Air Fryer.

After cooking the chickpeas, place them in a large bowl and pour the remaining seasoning on them. Stir to coat the seasoning on all the chickpeas. Allow them to cool and enjoy.

How to enjoy your chickpeas

These chickpeas can be enjoyed individually as a snack or used in your favorite recipes. Try them on top of a salad in place of croutons.

The Best Oil to Use

For crunchy chickpeas, it's best to use a light oil with a high smoke point, such as avocado oil, which coats well without weighing down the chickpeas or burning them at high temperatures.

Seasoning Options

I suggest you use your favorite seasoning choice. I've included a few in the recipe card below.

  • BBQ Seasoning
  • Jerk Seasoning
  • Ranch Seasoning
  • Cinnamon Sugar

Tanya's Notes on Air Fryer chickpeas

  • The best results were obtained by drying the chickpeas in the Air Fryer before adding the oil. They should be dry after 5 minutes.
  • How long it takes to cook the chickpeas will depend on the Air Fryer brand and size. I suggest checking the doneness of your chickpeas after 15 minutes.
  • Add half of the seasoning before the last 2 minutes of air frying and the remainder when the chickpeas are done. I noticed that when I added seasoning too early, it would fall off the chickpeas or taste burnt.
  • If you want to make these ahead or have leftover chickpeas, you can store them in a paper bag for a couple of days. I found that storing them in a paper bag was the best way to keep them crispy.
  • Have fun with the seasonings! The possibilities are endless.
  • The chickpeas may pop in the air fryer. This is normal, just be careful when removing them from the air fryer.
  • You do not need to remove the skin from the chickpeas.

Does the 17 minutes include the time to preheat the airfryer? I assume that you preheat first and then start the timer?

Hi Linda, the 17 minutes does not include the preheating. So preheat first and then start the timer, but check on them as some air fryers will cook them quicker.

Thanks for the recipe. I've been told if you don't rinse the chickpeas until all the bubbles are gone, one is more prone to be "musical". I rinsed them very well and was still "musical"! lol

I followed this recipe and was treated with a perfect sugar/cinnamon chickpea snack! In my small Ninja airfryer, I only needed 15 minutes. I put them in a plastic bag with a napkin to store them and they are still crispy 2 days later. Can’t wait to try more flavors! Thanks for sharing this recipe?

These turned out great, nice and crispy, but two notes: first, my seasoning didn't really stick very well, maybe I didn't use enough oil? Also, the next day the chickpeas were no longer crispy. Any advice?

Hi Cole, it may be the oil. I also make sure to only use half the season while air frying and I add the rest once done and still warm. I find storing the chickpeas in a paperbag that's folded will make them stay crispy longer.

Hi hoping I can get some help with this! I’ve tried the recipe a few times and keep having the same result. There is a LOT of popping in my air fryer and a large portion of the chickpeas explode, the shell/skin also come off and so I’m left with very little (although delicious). Any advice would be great

Hi Jen, Have you tried a different brand of chickpeas? I'm thinking that may be it. I haven't had any pop or explode. I usually pick up the cheapest can I can purchase in the stores though.

Hi Laura, I've never had any issues with exploding chickpeas so I'm not 100% sure. Is it a few exploding or a whole lot? If it's a few, I'd just contiunue cooking them. You could also try lowering the temperature a little but they may not get as crispy.

@Jen, Mine did this too and I think it is mostly the skin coming off. My guess is moisture left under the skin, especially where the skin is already broken or coming off. When it heats up, the moisture under the skin may cause it to pop. My first batch did this less and I rolled them around on a papertowel to dry before putting them in the airfryer. You could try that to see if it helps.

I love crispy chick peas. I normally saute them.
These came out way too hard for my taste. I like mine crispy on the outside. But not hard the whole way through. These are like hard corn kernels.
The BBQ seasoning was good. I'm going to try the recipe again and shorten the amount of time.

I just made these for a lunch side dish. So simple - I love drying the beans while the fryer heats up. Also, adding spices near the end prevents them from burning as in so many other recipes. Will definitely try all the flavors and then some!

The chickpeas are perfect but the seasoning falls off so I added a splash of olive oil and coated...then dropped them in seasoning ans they are perfect. Great recipe though nonetheless. Thank you
